Emotion History and the Congress for Curious People are delighted to present their tribute to the Golden Age of Paralelo and their homage to La Criolla, the Cabaret of Scandal.
Join us in celebrating the centenary of La Criolla, the legendary cabaret of the Barrio Chino, founded in June 1925, with a fascinating tour on the history and secrets of Avenida del Paralelo, followed by an immersive recreation of La Criolla at the iconic Tinta Roja club.
La Criolla was a unique milestone in European history, known for its libertine atmosphere, outstanding artists, and limitless decadence. This sanctuary of hedonism and pleasure, masterfully portrayed by Oleguer Junyent in Nits de Barcelona and by J. M. de Sagarra in La Vida Privada, hosted the first-ever drag beauty contest in 1934.
Step into the golden age of glamour and relive the footsteps of La Criolla’s famous visitors: Josephine Baker, Jean Genet, Georges Bataille, Douglas Fairbanks, Salvador Dalí, Federico García Lorca, and many more.

At our variety cabaret tribute to La Criolla, we will delight you with a prestigious lineup of performers, hosted by the irreverent multidisciplinary artist Erika Fichera, starring as Bella Chelito, the unmatched Spanish-Cuban vedette. Enjoy the intriguing and enigmatic dancer Carmen Tórtola Valencia, a frequent guest at La Criolla, brought to life by Madame Hiroshima. The night will reach its climax with a provocative and daring duet of transformist artists. Flor de Otoño—anarchist gunman by day, queen of the Barrio Chino by night—will be revived by La Waka, the queer sensation of flamenco. And of course, La Asturiana, Flor de Otoño’s intimate rival, a masterful dancer and contortionist, will be portrayed by Alejandro J. Lento. We will reach the heights of ecstasy with the voluptuous and explosive Bella Dorita, the Queen of Paralelo, interpreted by Evita Mansfield, the queen of burlesque.

Carnival’s Ticket includes: “The Golden Age of Paralelo” historical tour, which will take place on Sunday, March 2, at 5:30 PM. Led by historian Felipe Trigo, specialist in contemporary history and co-director of Emotion History, this tour will evoke the extraordinary entertainment scene that thrived on Avenida del Paralelo between 1894 and 1939, one of the most dazzling in the Western world. Our route will explore various aspects of this golden era: Theaters and cabarets, Attractions and curiosity cabinets, Air-raid shelters in Poble Sec. From there, the tour will continue to Tinta Roja club, where we will enjoy the tribute to La Criolla cabaret starting at 6:00 PM.
